Charles Krauthammer seems to regard the idea that environmentalism
could be harmful as just another kooky new right idea.
Unfortunately, environmentalism may have done considerable harm
already and might become almost as harmful as communism.
Why?

1. grab bag of causes

2. Suppose the French and Japanese are right about nuclear power and
the U.S. is wrong in stopping its development. When the next oil
crisis comes, the French at least won't suffer from an electricity
shortage, and the Japanese won't also if the crisis is delayed
until after 2000. When nuclear energy has saturated its easiest
application, electricity generation for conventional purposes, it
can then be applied to generating electricity for battery powered
cars.

Some environmentalists understand this, but they all value their
political alliances more than they value avoiding shortages. Earth
Day 1990, supports all environmentalist causes.
